Taser Use Lawsuits Mount - As Black Folks and others, Sue Police Agencies across America

AAPP says: "It's nothing less than high-tech pre-trial torture of black folks - American style. It's time for Congressional hearings on this matter."

Finally major news outlets, like ABC News are reporting on the debate emerging over the use of electric stun guns as a "pain compliance" or better yet a "torture device" by law enforcement.

What We Think About Taser Abuse

As reported by ABC News, At issue isn't whether police can use the weapon, known as a Taser, to protect themselves from dangerous suspects or to prevent a criminal from escaping. That is its designed purpose. Instead, the question is to what extent police may use a stun gun against someone who is not actively resisting arrest but who is passively refusing to obey a police command.

To some officers, such refusal is a form of resisting arrest and constitutes grounds to shoot 50,000 volts of electricity into that person's body in five-second bursts. When a person is tased, the central nervous system is overridden and the person experiences a seizure accompanied by intense pain. More HERE

Maybe it's about time national organizations such as the NAACP get on board and support the petition for Congressional hearings on Tasering. I'm sure the pregnant women, April Griffin and the thousands of taser victims would appreciate some advocacy on this issue from the national organization. I also know many bloggers would appreciate some advocacy from national black organizations, who have been sitting by the side lines as black folks are being electrocuted to death, in a high-tech pre-trial torture American style. The use of electric shock as a method of torture was first documented in Nazi, Germany, but today it is still used as an acceptable use of police departments in America.

Who could forget the torture killing in Gwinnett County, Georgia, an un-edited police videotape shows 31-year-old Deacon Frederick Williams being struck with a TASER five times in 43 seconds, just 4 minutes after being led into the jail. He was handcuffed behind his back and in leg restraints, following an epileptic seizure at his home; an ambulance was called by his wife and son, but the police arrived first. His last words were: "Don't kill me, man. Don't kill me." No charges have been filed in the torture / murder; the County DA refused to show this video to a Grand Jury, even though another man in custody was murdered just months earlier after being tortured with a TASER by the same police. The Video has been since taken off of YouTube, to the horror.

NO Charges Against Police who Killed 15 Year Old Teen.

BAY CITY -- The Bay City Police will not be charged in the death of a 15-year-old Brett Elder who died after an officer tased him on March 22, 2009.

Prosecutor Kurt Asbury says there isn't evidence that officers "committed any criminal act that caused or contributed to the death of Brett Elder."

Elder died March 22 after police were called to his Aunt's home in Bay City. Elder and other teenagers were reported to be very drunk. When police allegedly attempted to calm Elder, the teenager began fighting police.

Reports say an autopsy found both the alcohol and the taser contributed to the boy's death.

In a statment, Prosecutor Asbury said, "The unfortunate reality of the situation was that the underaged Brett Elder was very intoxicated durikng the early morning hours of March 22, 2009, and wihtout any meaningful adult supervision or guidance, placed himself in a situation which resulted in his death. He was highly agitated and combative, tried to start fights with numerous people, as well as the police officers called to the resience to deal with his 'uncontrollable behavior,' all which contributed to his untimely death." Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans only make up 6.8% of engineering and other technical staffers in the tech industry,

AAPP say: I Guess a 40-60% high school drop out rate is impacting black, latino, and Native American communities big time.

It's clear that the high-tech industry has a diversity problem, according to a new study.

Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans only make up 6.8% of engineering and other technical staffers in the tech industry, the Anita Borg Institute, a group that promotes the hiring of women in high-tech, said on Monday. These groups make up an even smaller percentage of workers at higher levels within tech companies.

So-called under-represented minorities make up 27% of the population as a whole and receive 18% of undergraduate computer-science degrees. They earn 8% of masters and doctoral degrees in computer science. But they were barely present at the seven large Silicon Valley companies the Anita Borg Institute studied. (The companies weren’t identified.)

“You need diversity to have innovation,” says Caroline Simard, the study’s author. But the high-tech industry has become inhospitable to these workers, who instead choose to work in technical jobs in other industries or pursue careers in marketing or sales. One problem is the lack of senior leadership that under-represented minorities can look up to: Black men only make up 1.8% of high-level technical employees in high-tech, and black women 1.6%; Hispanic men make up 2.5% of high-level workers; the study didn’t find any Hispanic women.

Many under-represented minorities quit their jobs due to a lack of diversity, making the lack of minority workers a self-fulfilling prophecy. More than half of the women of color included in the study said that they were looking to leave their companies, says Simard. More HERE

Congressman Charlie Rangel pissed off in wake of cop shooting says:

"Make certain he (Obama) doesn't run around in East Harlem unidentified."

Rangel added that there's "no question that being [a person] of color puts you in jeopardy in communities like Harlem and East Harlem.

Janoris Jenkins - Tasered for fighting, resisting arrest without violence

Yes, a black man was Tased and then arrested on misdemeanor charges of affray and resisting arrest without violence, according to the police report.

Janoris Jenkins, 20, is a rising sophomore and a starting cornerback for the UF football team. His mugshot was taken over the weekend at the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.

According to GatorSports.com , Gainesville Police arrested UF sophomore starting cornerback Janoris Jenkins early Saturday morning after they reported he was involved in a fight and an officer used a Taser on him in downtown.

Jenkins, 20, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of affray and resisting arrest without violence, according to the police report.

Gainesville Police spokesman Lt. Keith Kameg said two officers received a report of a fight in the 100 block of South Main Street and arrived at the location at about 2 a.m. to find a group of about six people, including Jenkins, fighting. The officers, who were in uniform, identified themselves and ordered the fighting to stop.

According to the report, when the fighting continued, one of the officers drew a Taser gun and told the group stop again. At that point, Jenkins hit another person in the head, police reported.

Kameg said the officer then used the Taser on Jenkins once, but after the probes came loose Jenkins stood up and ran a “short distance” before being arrested by Gainesville Police officers.

Jenkins was the only person arrested and Kameg said it was unclear who else was involved in the fight.

Jenkins, whom Kameg said was “extremely cooperative” once arrested, was then taken to GPD’s downtown annex and was treated medically before being transported to jail. More HERE

Jimmy Carter Breaks With Obama Agree's with AA Political Pundit

OK, So Jimmy Carter didn't announce that he agreed with me, but he does agree that the examination of abuses needed. He also agrees with my position regarding the need to release the photos of American detainee torture under the Bush administration. I recently talked about this issue on my BlogTalkRadio program.

Get this folks, as reported by CNN, in an interview with CNN's Campbell Brown, former president Jimmy Carter said he disagreed with President Obama's decision to oppose the release of photos depicting detainee torture. " I don't have the responsibility to deal with the consequences, but I think ... most of his supporters were hoping that he would be much more open in the revelation of what we've done in the past."

Reporter, Brenda Lee "ousted from a press area near Air Force One "

I thought reporters are suppose to cover news not make news. Well, that is not the case involving Ms. Brenda Lee. You see, Ms. Brenda Lee a writer for a small Georgia newspaper, and writer of that newspapers The Bird's Eye View, wanted to give President Obama a Letter, but she was forcibly removed from a press area near Air Force One on Thursday shortly before he arrived at the airport. Candidly I don't get why Ms. Lee was trying to pass a letter to the President. She is a journalist, she just needed to cover the news, not make the news. I don't get how as a journalist she is advocating for Ptresident Obama to take a position that she wants him to take on an issue.

The Huffington Post reports, Airport security officers carried Brenda Lee away by the feet and arms as she protested her removal. She was then allowed to leave. She said the letter she had written was opposing gay marriage. Hey, Ms. Lee, your a reporter, why were you taking a position on any issue, yours is to report on Barack Obama's decisions and activities, not to guide him to take a position.

The Huffington Posr reports the incident occurred about 10 minutes before Obama arrived at LAX - Los Angeles International Airport by helicopter to board Air Force One. He had been in Los Angeles to attend a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Beverly Hills on Wednesday.

Lee said later in a telephone interview with The Associated Press that she wanted to hand Obama a letter urging him "to take a stand for traditional marriage."

She said she asked a Secret Service agent to give the president her letter, but he refused and referred her to a White House staffer. Lee said she refused to give the staffer the letter. More HERE

I arrived at the Los Angeles Airport at 4 a.m. and was driven up to the press area by Mr. Albert Rodriquez where I waited until about 6 a.m. I noticed a person who was on Air Force One on Wednesday afternoon. When that gentleman came near the barricade where I was standing, I asked if he would give a letter to President Obama. He said that he could not do that, but recommended that I give the letter to a staff member. He said that they would be out shortly.

A few minutes later, two men came over (one later identified himself as Secret Servicemen Warly) and asked for my information; I identified myself as Rev. Brenda Lee with the Georgia Informer. They asked to open the letter. I gave Agent Warly permission to do so and he opened and read the letter. He gave it back to me.

At that point, I sat down and started to write my article for the Georgia Informer. Another man came up and identified himself as a staff person. He offered to take the letter for President Obama. My spirit did not agree with him, and I did not believe that he would give the letter to the President, but I quickly prayed and left it up to GOD. One of the small sheets of paper fell and I opened the one that was left in my hand. It said “No” meaning that I was not to give him the letter.

I apologized and told the staff person that I would keep the letter in hopes that the President would pass by. He then told me that he could guarantee that President Obama would not be coming near me and he asked that I not wave, motion, or yell out to the President. At that point, I was offended, as I do not carry myself in that manner. I agreed to his conditions. He walked off. No one ever said that I was not to give the letter to President Obama if he were to come near me.

I started a conversation with two reporters from Watts. The staff member returned a second time; he had two men with him. Detective Martinez did the talking. He asked me to follow him from the press area. I did and once I was out of the press area, the staff person said that he heard me tell the reporters that I was doing to disrupt the photo shot. At no time did I say anything like this to anyone, and I then called him a liar, and I asked Detective Martinez to check with the other reporters. The staff person said that he would allow me to return to the press area, if he could stand next to me. I agreed because I had no plans to disrupt the proceedings.

When I return to the press area, I said to the Watts reporters, “Heavens, you are reporters, and you would allow the men to accost me without intervening on my behalf.” The older gentleman said to me, “What would you have me do?” I said, “You are right. I apologize to you.” The next thing I knew the staff person returned with three men. This time Detective Martinez request that I leave the pres area. I asked why I was being asked to leave. “I have not done anything and I want to know why I am being asked to leave.” At this point, the staff person waved his hand. (I knew what that meant because Bishop Bolam of Savannah, Georgia had me assaulted by his security people with the wave of his hand a few years early.) I made the decision to sit down to defuse the situation.

At that point someone grab my shoulder, and then the detectives were all over me and I said, “Now I am not leaving.” I screamed at the reporters to do their job because I could see that they were beginning to turn their backs. The detectives started dragging me; I heard someone say, “Get her feet.” They carried me out of the press area. Firemen thought that I had fainted and rushed toward me asking if I needed medical assistance.

I said, “No! Take a picture.” By this time detectives were trying to force me into an unmarked car. It had some writing on it, but I could not read it. I told them no way was I going to let them put me into a car. Detective Martinez stopped and said, ”We could have put your hands behind your back, hand cuffed you, put you in a black and white car and taken you off for 72 hours of observation. (My sister, Betty had worked on the sixth floor of Macon Hospital, so I knew that he was implying that I had mental problems. “Are you suggesting that I have mental problems?” He said, “No.” But he asked if I was on drugs. By this time I was exhausted and I told him that I wanted to leave, if I was not under arrest.

I requested my driver and they said that Mr. Rodriquez did not want me in his vehicle. I told them that was fine, but that I would walk back to my car because I did not trust them. They said that we were in lock down and we could not move. Once lock down was lifted, Mr. Rodriquez came over and I got into the van. Agent Warly came up and said that he had not found me to be a threat to President Obama and wanted me to know that.

His sole purpose was to make sure that the President was not under attack; he requested an interview; I declined his request and left LAX. I requested Detective Martinez’ card and the name of his superior. He said it was his job to remove me after the staff member demanded my removal. He refused to give me the name of the staff person, but I took a picture of him.

My reaction to the above event is total shock. All of it was unnecessary. At no point did I demand to give President Obama the letter; it was in an envelope and address to the White House. I thought I would save myself and stamp and I would be assured that he received it.

Nothing has changed for Blacks, especially women. I do not believe that a White, clergy with a collar would have been asked to leave the press area simple because he had a letter in his hand. I think the events were three folded. It was an opportunity for the Catholic Church and the gays to discredit me, and it cast President Obama in negative light for a Black female to be mishandled to this extent.

The staff person acted improperly and everyone knew it, but no one would stop him. It was an abuse of power."

AAPP: Hmmm... I guess a few bloggers have said it best, people just get carried away by Obama,, or better yet, that's what happens when your a wingnut African-American shock activist journalist.

Madison police data show blacks -- were Tasered by Madison police twice as often as whites

Tasers used more on minorities, Madison police data show

Minorities -- especially blacks -- were Tasered by Madison police more than twice as often as whites last year, and more often than whites in three of the last five, police data.

Nearly six years after Madison police began arming officers with Tasers and four years after the controversial Tasering of a black high school student, police department records suggest minorities have the weapons used against them at a rate far out of proportion with how often they are arrested.

Minorities — especially blacks — were Tasered more than twice as often as whites last year, and more often than whites in three of the last five. In the other two years, about as many whites were Tasered as nonwhites. In each of the five years, nonwhites were arrested for about half as many crimes as whites.

Mark P. Jones, a professor at Rice University who last year co-authored a first-of-its-kind study that found a similar pattern in the use of Tasers by the Houston Police Department, said Madison’s Taser data is not enough to prove bias in their use. But he said it is worthy of closer study.

“What these data point out is that there’s potentially a problem,” said Jones.

Madison police question the validity of comparing arrest data with Taser use and contend that every Taser deployment is reviewed after the fact to see if it was appropriate and conformed to policy.

“It would be important to look at the facts in each case,” said Capt. Vic Wahl, who oversaw the program when it was first introduced. “The review process has worked. It’s not just a rubber stamp.” More HERE

AAPP Says: There are so many black mothers seeking justice behind Police taser 'murders' of their sons

As reported by livesteez.com, in recent months, too many young black men have been injured and in worse cases died at the hands of police officials around the nation. In circumstances where surrounding environments are dangerous, who is there to trust when those who are supposed to protect are equally dangerous?

In the recent case of Robert MItchell, a learning disabled 16-year old who was tasered to death by Detroit police in early April, was believed to be "resisting arrest" when, in fact, he was frightened by law enforcement. The young man's mother, Renea Mitchell said Wednesday her son wanted "nothing to do" with police, reports CNN. More HERE

PA newspaper runs ad calling for assassination of Barack Obama

Yes, the latest attack on Obama becomes personal with an ad that calls for his assassination.

As reported by Francis L. Holland, Michael Morrill and Philadelphia Enquirer The Warren Pennsylvania Times-Observer (www.timesobserver.com) published an ad on Thursday calling for the assassination of President Barack Obama.

Francis L. Holland has a link to the AD. The Warren, Pennsylvania Times-Observer has apologized, saying that the person who approved the ad "didn't recognize the significance of the names" and that they have "notified the authorities." Seriously? Garfield and McKinley...sure. But Lincoln and Kennedy? MORE HERE

Get this, as reported by the Reuters, the paper says it mistakenly ran ad urging Obama killing.

AAPP: It seems that the newspapers in the United States are comfortable with these attacks. Now the question is when will the Secret Service and the Justice Department say, enough is enough? When will they stop making it a PR Campaign for NBC?

Update on investigation into Obama classified

A representative of the U.S. Secret Service was in Warren Friday, accompanied by a Warren City police officer to investigate the circumstances surrounding the placement of a classified ad in the Times Observer on Thursday. Get this, Secret Service representatives, who interviewed the ad taker and the publisher, and indicated that they would also talk to the person who placed the ad, requested that the paper not publicly reveal the name of that person because it would hamper their investigation. AAPP says: Why not publicly reveal the name of that person? Shouldn't the people of that city, state and country need to know the person who would like to do harm to elected officials? If it where a black man they would have released that fact in a heart beat.

Note: There have been multiple assassination attempts on Presidents of the United States; there have been 90 known attempts to kill sitting and former Presidents as well as Presidents-elect. Four attempts on sitting Presidents have succeeded: Abraham Lincoln (the 16th President), James A. Garfield (the 20th President), William McKinley (the 25th President) and John F. Kennedy (the 35th President). Two other Presidents were injured in attempted assassinations: then former President Theodore Roosevelt and then sitting President Ronald Reagan. Source

White Police Officer Threatens Black Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin - Race, Color and Politics

Cop says he wants to 'beat' Atlanta mayor with bat.

More Post-Racial bigotry, this coming out of Atlanta, Georgia where a white police officer has threatened the Mayor of Atlanta saying: "I want to beat her [Mayor Shirley Franklin] in the head with a baseball bat sometimes when I think about it," Sgt. Scott Kreher said into a microphone earlier this month in an apparent off-hand remark during a presentation he was giving to the council. Within days, the 17-year department veteran was suspended.

As reported by CNN, Kreher said the "it" that made him want to club the mayor was that, despite repeated complaints, the police union contends the city is not honoring workers' compensation claims for cops whose careers ended when they were seriously injured on the job.

Franklin, one of the nation's high-profile mayors, told CNN on Tuesday that the officers' complaints are a "separate issue" from Kreher's comments.

Amber Alert Two Black Men, a Cadillac

As reported by CNN, A Pennsylvania woman who called 911 to report that she and her daughter had been abducted by two black men was charged with making a false report and identity theft after police found the pair at a Disney resort in Florida, authorities said Wednesday.

Bonnie Sweeten, 38, told authorities Tuesday afternoon that she and 9-year-old Julia Rakoczy were kidnapped after Two black men in a Cadillac rear-ended her sport-utility vehicle in Upper Southampton, north of Philadelphia. They were being held in the trunk of the Cadillac, she claimed.

Sweeten was arrested late Wednesday at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort in Orlando, Florida, said Michelle Henry, district attorney for Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Sweeten awaits extradition proceedings. More HERE
