News and Notes

Check out another great roundtable discussion on NPR's News & Notes

Last week, Farai Chideya, host of NPR's News and Notes held another great roundtable discussion with black bloggers regarding why some black conservatives are deserting the GOP in favor of Barack Obama. They also discussed why blogging can lead to an arrest in some countries. Joining in the conversation were Carmen Van Kerckhove of Racialicious, Wayne Hicks of Electronic Village, and Kevin Ross of Three Brothers and a Sister. check out the conversation by listening in HERE [13 min 46 sec].

Bill Clinton Waits 3 weeks To Support Obama

AAPP: You ever wonder why it has taken some three weeks for Bill clinton to support Obama?
Check this out, not only has it taken 3 weeks for him to show public support he said it through a spokesman. As reported by CBS and Asociated Press (AP) former President Clinton said through a spokesman Tuesday that he is committed to helping Barack Obama become president, his first comments in support of his wife's former rival since their primary ended three weeks ago.
AAPP: whatever Bill! Keep your one sentence endorsement to yourself. oops, did I just say that?
AP reports, relations between the last Democratic president and the candidate who wants to be the next one are still frosty - they still haven't spoken in the aftermath of the heated campaign. But Bill Clinton extended an offer to help in a one-sentence statement from spokesman Matt McKenna. "President Clinton is obviously committed to doing whatever he can and is asked to do to ensure Senator Obama is the next president of the United States," McKenna said. It's not clear what Obama might ask him to do. The campaign wasn't specific when asked. "A unified Democratic Party is going to be a powerful force for change this year and we're confident President Clinton will play a big role in that," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. More HERE

Comedian George Carlin has died in Los Angeles at 71

Comedian George Carlin has died in Los Angeles at 71. As reported in the Washington Post Carlin was selected last week by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to receive this year's Mark Twain Prize, a lifetime achievement award presented to an outstanding comedian.

Over a career of half a century, Carlin placed himself in the forefront of comic commentators on the American scene. He was particularly known for an album that referred to what he described as the seven words that could not be used on television. More HERE

In memory of George Carlin we leave you with these 7 words:

Obama Leads by 15% - GoodyBye Republicans?

A new Newsweek poll shows Barack Obama up by 15 points over McCain

As Jay Bookman from the Atlanta Journal Consitution recently noted, “Obama’s current lead also reflects the large party-identification advantage the Democrats now enjoy — 55 percent of all voters call themselves Democrats or say they lean toward the party while just 36 percent call themselves Republicans or lean that way. Even as McCain seeks to gain voters by distancing himself from the unpopular Bush and emphasizing his maverick image, he is suffering from the GOP’s poor reputation among many voters.”

That’s almost a 20-point advantage in party ID. The poll didn’t break that number out by age, but I would guess the Democrats’ advantage is particularly large among younger voters. And once young people identify with a party, they tend to maintain that identification throughout their lives. It may be a generation before the Republican Party returns to power nationally.

John McCain is no Abraham Lincoln. Or was he? Oops, maybe I'm wrong. It seems Newt Gingrich thinks so. But the fact of the matter is Abraham Lincoln 'was a racist who wanted to deport blacks. Maybe that really is what Newt Gingrich should have compared McCain to Abraham Lincoln as, American heroes and bigots.

Alaska Blogger "Celtic Divia" Leading By Example

Alaska Blogger Celtic Divia Leading By Example

Hat Tip Celtic Divia

Racial dialogue can be a walk in a mine-field...but it's worth it.

Can you say, "geek paradise?!"

Congratulations CelticDiva for building a team of diverse bloggers who will blog at the Democratic National Convention. CelticDiva reports her team will consist of herself, Writing Raven, Monocot, Kaerick and of course, the only one who DOESN'T have an internet name, her 10-year-old daughter/photographer Morrigan! Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that her daughter will be able to join her on the floor of the Convention Center (Celtic Diva haven't totally given up hope).

As you may all recall, Raven contacted me as the result of a column I wrote for the Anchorage Daily News on race and diversity in the DNCC Blog Pool. Raven's new blog is "Alaska Real" and I believe she's the first Alaska Native blogger who is actually focusing on Alaska Native issues.

She is pleased that she as the Alaska member of the State Blogger Pool will bring a gender and culturally diverse team. More HERE

Here are the stats for the record:

4 female (80%) and 1 male (20%)
3 Caucasian (60%), 1 African American (20%) and 1 Alaska Native (20%)
1 disabled (20%)

Per Alaska's 2006 Census:

- Female population 48.3%
- Black population 3.7%
- American Indian and Alaska Native population 15.4%.
- Persons experiencing a disability 12.4%

Great Job Celtic Diva! I wonder if other state bloggers will follow your lead? I also wonder if the DNCC is tracking the level of diversity developed by state credentialed bloggers. Doubt it. Lets see if someone like Chris Bowers or Matt Stoller or others, will start an effort to actually track diversity within the blogosphere.

On another note, check out the new blog, the AfroSpear in the Whitosphere. This is a blog that catalogues white-owned blogs that acknowledge the existence and vitality of the afrosphere by providing themselves and their readers a way to access mainstream media articles about the AfroSpear. What do you think about the word "whiteosphere" is thee such thing as the "whiteosphere"?
